>Palenque ruins

Another day.  Another set of ruins.  Palenque ruins are great.  Different than Tikal but totally worth a visit and walk around.  The museum added a nice touch of information before we walked around.  Little Maya history never hurt anyone!

  1. >I envy you getting to see all of these ruins. I had the chance to go to Tulum or Xunantunich while I was in Belize, so I opted for the Stone Lady (Wu…) since I had never heard of it before. The excavations began in 1938 and there are some remarkable friezes on the east and west sides of the main structure. Our group was so fortunate to have as our guide a native Belizean who was a Harvard PhD. in archaeology. Wow! He was amazing and was also training in a young gal who had just graduated from HS. When I visited with her, she told me that she plans to go on to 2-yr. college to study environmental science. I'm glad because my 4 hrs. on the bus allowed me to see some of the beauty of Belize. The sad thing that Dr. Mark commented on was Belize's position smack in the middle of the drug route from Colombia to USA, which has contributed to the decline of Belize's literacy rate from 93 to 75% in the past two decades. Kids drop out of school to make fast money in the drug trade. I hate drugs! You have probably heard similar stories during your travels. I really enjoyed reading about your sisters' visit.
