Border Patrol

We’ve been riding close to the Mexican border since we started this trip and have daily run-in’s with the US Border Patrol.  We’ve been through the check points on bikes and all they ask is if we’re US citizens, then we rolled through one in a car coming back from Big Bend National park and then ran the drug dog around the car, asked us each a handful of questions and then let us go.

Border patrol pulled off to the side of the road, hot on the tracks of a runner coming from Mexico.

They patrol by foot, truck, horse, plane, helicopter, 4-wheeler and car….so we’ve seen.  Today, we saw over 40 of these vehicles.  Yesterday, we purpursely stopped to break in front of a truck that was creeping along these gravel side roads.

See the side gravel road next to the paved road, it leads to nowhere, it follows Hwy 90 forever and is a trap used by the US Border Patrol to check for footprints. They said that some try to jump the road and leave one HUGE footprint, while others try the brush technique to pretend they were never there, both great ideas...yet they forget this is a daily norm for the Patrol.

What they do is grade these roads almost daily, then in the morning drive about 5 mph along them looking for footprints of runners and then track them.  The officer we talked to said they get atleast an attempt a day.  And that’s just in his territory.

Make us always wonder what’s to the Southside of the road.  How many eyes are watching us and how many people we’ve passed that are hiding.
