Tire boot

We’re riding Continental Gatorskin 700X28 tires.  They’re durable, tough, fast and awesome.  But after  1,800 miles a side wall finally tore and we had our first real flat tire outside of Burton, TX.  The air sizzled out of it as we came to a stop in the ditch.  Unpacked my bike and saw the damage.

Where the damage was done

Because you can’t order and have a tire delivered to you on ‘ditch between red house and blue mail box on TX farm road 3272’ in one hour.  We had to improvise.

Boot inside tire = spare rubber piece and electrical tape

With wisdom gained from last years trip, I was carrying extra rubber pieces for times like this.  Took the tire and tube off, got some electrical tape and put cut rubber ‘boot’ over the torn area.  Put new tube inside, tire back on and rode it.

Just chilling on the side of the road, fixing my tire!

Rode it over 100 miles thus far.  Bought more tires once we made it to the city.  We’re going to let the tire stay on until it breaks again, just to see how far a boot’d tire can last.

Mission accomplished! Ready to ride again!
